Hi,
I read that Photoshop Elements can do much of what Photoshop can do. If Photoshop Elements can do what I need it to, then $100 is a possibilty. The retail of Photoshop is not now. I would like to be able to (among other things) using it to create DVD case inserts- a little smaller than a standard sheet of paper that goes inside the full size DVD cases. I would like to create inserts that use many photos, plus have white text boxes on the back, the title on the spine, and of course the title and label on the front, over photos. I would print the cover out using a quality inkjet or photo printer. Is this something that would easily fall within Photoshop Essentials capability? Can Photoshop files be opened in Photoshop?
Thank you for your help.

There is no doubt in my mind you can make Elements do this but….

The specialist programs out there for creating CD and DVD inserts have custom templates that make the job very straightforward and error free. You’d be charged with the responsibility of designing your own ‘template’ in Elements.

Text can be oriented in any direction you choose and the options for artistic embellishment is much greater than with a specialist program. The end result may be more to your liking but you will have to work to achieve the greater quality Elements gives you.

Don’t expect to make a DVD insert in the first 30 minutes using Elements if you are new to the Photoshop family of products. Learning the program and creating your first insert will take considerably longer.

Craig,

I do my inserts in Elements. I spent a while setting up the correct size, fonts, lettering position etc and made it into a template for a DVD covers. I just alter it each time I want to do a new one.

Photoshop files will open in Elements and visa versa BUT you may not be able to alter some of the effects … most are fine but not all.

Craig,

If you are using a Windows PC you can avoid the template design problem with their free software called "Design Pro Limited" that will let you use your Elements modified photos on their various forms which include Inkjet cd inserts. Produce the photo collage in Elements and then add text and print with the Avery template driven software.

If you are interested go here: <http://www.avery.com/> point to Software at the top of the page and click on "Avery Software" in the drop down list. As with anything there is a learning curve but, at least, the template problem is eliminated. Even has a handy print calibration routine that makes sure that your printout lines up with their forms.

Bob (No, I am not now or ever have been associated with Avery.)
