Automating "Save for web" operation.

Most likely, when you use "Save As," the file size is bigger because in the Photoshop preferences, Photoshop is set to save a color profile, save a thumbnail, save an icon, and so on. All these things make the file larger. If you change the Photoshop preferences and tell it not to include any of these things in files, the files will be closer to the size you see when you use Save for Web.

If you’re comfortable with the command line, do it in ImageMagick.

mogrify -format png -resize 85% *.jpg

You can also specify whether you want color profiles or EXIF data or whatever else.

(Note also that mogrify normally over-writes original files, so it’s only because you’re looking for PNG files that this works. If you wanted smaller JPEGs, you’d have to make a script.)

you can record the "save for web function"
then in automate use the naming functions and direct to a folder you like

I have done that but the file sizes are still different.

For example take random images (screenshots in my case) and save them in a folder.

Now reduce the size of them to 85% and save using "save for web" as PNG. My file is 50KB.

Using the automated method the files are 112KB.

IF YOU NEED TO save PNG SETTINGS ACCORDING TO FILE SIZE LOOK IN THE FLYOUT in image ready
you can select an option based upon that

IF THE images are diff sizes to begin with you need to add a dimension re-size as part of the action.
you can use IM or PS for that step (IM-bottom of palette 2nd tab) if you make all by percent and they are not the same to begin with that won’t work

save for web will always give a smaller file than save as from PS (by default)
save for web shows you more choices in the jpg and gif, png options
