I’m using photoshop 7 and the operating system is windows XP on a PC. My questions is, Does anyone have a good technique to mask out around hair and preserve those fine hairs without getting a blockhead look?

Depends on the picture. Why not post a link to it at www.pixentral.com so we can have a look.

Look at your channels. If there is one with good contrast, duplicate it and enhance the contrast as mush as you can. You can use the new channel to make a mask.

This is a difficult problem and can take a lot of work. You might check out the Knockout 2 plugin, which has some tools for this kind of selecting/mnasking.

Thanks for all your help. I’m going to try some of these methods but I also posted the photo to www.pixentral.com. It’s at this link: < http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1aPcCsPZKh6hOOssPY WudPE2wLdRi>

Would love to hear if you think I can succeed in masking this head.

Use the most contrasty channel, duplicate it to use as a layer mask, then use dodge and burn tools to enhance it.

Explore the Extract filter. I assume you have a much higher resolution file than the one posted. Extract does need good sharp detail to work efficiently.
