problems with grain/pixels on deep sky colors

Hello,

I’ve been scanning a lot of slides using my Nikon Coolscan IV. For the most part I’m happy with the results. One thing I’ve noticed though is that when scanning photos of deep color skies (ie sunsets), the gradient from the light to the dark doesn’t look good. For example, it looks like the orange horizon mixes with dark pixels to create the gradiant.

If you check out the photo you’ll know exactly what I mean. This happens even with the original scan at 2900 (before I resize and save the photo as a jpg).

I’ve tried using grain reduction from the scanner, what Nikon calls GEM. Other than that, I’ve experimented with a few things in photoshop but I haven’t figured what, if anything, will work.

Any advice?
