Maybe I’m tired, but I’m having problems following along on page 257 in lesson 9, "Creating a design element from type".

For instruction "1", it says to "Make sure no layers are selected in the Layers palette, then select the Horizontal Type tool"

Then it says to "Click the color swatch to open the Color Picker, and then move the mouse over the olives showing through…"

OK, if no layers are selected then how do I move the mouse over something that’s not visible?

Also, how do I click the color swatch to open the Color Picker? Why isn’t the Eyedropper visible like in the picture?

For instruction "2" it says "Click the cursor in the upper left corner of the white box…" but they said to "make sure that no layers are selected in the Layers palette".

I cannot for the life of me figure out putting in the ‘I’ 11 times.

Obviously, I’m new to PS and I’m simply following the instructions one sentence at a time. I spent well over an hour on this one page and I’m starting to feel real stupid. Nothing I’m doing works.

Could someone please read page 257 and translate this into short easy to understand instructions?

Not got the book, but when you select the type tool, you will get the colour swatch on the options bar. Click on this and your cursor becomes the eye dropper and the colour palette opens. You then move around the image to select a colour, the colour swatches will change. Don’t know about "no layers selected" You will always have at least one active, thats how you see your image. Selected is not the same as visible, you can make them "invisible" by clicking on the eye icon in the layers palette. When you select the type tool, are you clicking on the image to create a type layer?

A few minutes after I wrote my original note I figured it out; ignore the book’s instructions — they’re wrong.

By turning on certain layers, I was able to finish that portion of the project.

If I was taking a class, the instructor would no doubt have stated that the book was incorrect and given the proper set of steps.
