Open new windows in float mode

I want to be able to open a new window and have it float, not be a tab. However, I can’t find a preference for that. So each time, I have to track down my main window, find the correct tab, and drag it off to float it.

I’d like to be able to ‘float all’ or something for current and new windows. Is that possible?

Preferences > Interface… uncheck Open Documents as Tabs
