If Window/Layers or Window/reset palette locations doesn’t help to find the layers palette then it may be time to reset preferences – restart Elements holding down the command/option/shift key and you will get a dialogue box asking you whether to delte the Adobe photoshop Settings file. Sometimes this helps in otherwise inexplicable situations.

Out of the clear blue the unsharpe mask function freezes the whole program. The mouse pointer turns into a square. I can minimized the screen but that is all. It thought that the above suggestion might work but I have no idea what the command/option keys are. Please advise

In the PC, you hold down Control/Alt/shift Keys at the same time when you restart Elements. This will remove the old preferences file and take you back to the default one.

Hope this helps, Tom
