X64 I assume? I have CS2 on a dual machine with X64. No problems. If it runs fine without the other programs running and crashes with other programs running I would guess not enough memory is the problem. When it crashes is it photoshop that crashes or XP that crashes. The error when it crashes?
I’ve got a Dell E521 (Win MCE) with the dual core x64 and CS2 runs fine. When I’m bored I open PS with lot’s of files and then intentionally start applications, one after another just to watch the performance display and compare it against the efficiency rating in CS2.
Well, it’s better than what’s on TV lately……..
Well, the CPU’s are Xeon. I have 4GB if RAM, I dont think thats the issue.
When it crashes PS and Illustrator, just seem to go crazy, I mean they hang, or just crash.
I’m not sure how much of the computer’s resources Illustrator needs (it’s been too long since I’ve used it), but it may be a memory contention issue. Especially if Bridge is open too. Or bad memory.
I have this problem too!! HELP!!
I have a Dual Xeon PWS690. My company literally bought the most expensive workstation Dell offered (in December 06) because of the intense deadlines in my position. I work almost exclusively in Photoshop and Illustrator…
….and I have the same "hang-lag-crash" kinds of problems as Brian.
Dell Precision PWS690
Dual Xeon 3.20 Ghz
3 gig of ram
XP pro SP2
NVIDEA Quadro FX 4500
I’ve set up scratch disks, etc… nothing seems to work. I’m beginning to wonder if it’s a video card problem. I have dual monitors running in 1280×1024.
ANY help would be sincerely appreciated.
I am also running a dual monitor system, maybe thats the glitch?
I will do some tests today and see.
Similar set up; dual monitors; no crash.
Someone described a similar problem in the Illustrator forum, and one of the responses suggested turning off hyperthreading in the BIOS.
I’m currently testing that configuration right now… so far no problems, but I haven’t really been able to put the machine through its paces because I’ve been in meetings most of the day.
I’ll post more when I know more.
That would be great!!! I am about to pull my hair out at this one.
Thanks
Brian
I see there is a new BIOS update for the 490. I have just installed it and will see how it goes.
I’m wondering why the company bought Pentium 4 architecture Xeons (with its troublesome hyperthreading), and not the newest Core Duos… I guess just looking at the speed of the processor (in GhZ, similar to decide which car is the best looking at the engine’s max RPM)
similar to decide which car is the best looking at the engine’s max RPM
or which amplifier goes up to "11"! π
Hey, any ideas yet on this one?
Turning off hyperthreading does NOT fix the problem…
I’m at wit’s end here.
PECourtejoie,
Yes, that was one of the first things I tried. Thanks, though.
I also already tried that, also turning HT off did not solve anything.
I have the same problem and I also get this sometimes at start-up
<

I run a dell 380 dual core with XP pro w/dual monitors
I strongly recommend to gather all your system info (there is a function in Photoshop’s help menu to do so); add as much data as possible (filesize, conditions of the crash…) then use the bug report form (there is a contact text on top of this page that should lead you to it).
If you can, provide more info here (When does it not load: first boot of the day? after a few days with Windows open, etc.)
First of all, my problem isn’t really crashing (although that has happened). The problem is more of a "hang" or "lag"… when I have both Illustrator and Photoshop open and working on documents (or with Bridge running), even the simplest commands (moving an object or endpoint, for example) will slow this "high-speed" PC to a crawl.
What I do (interview/presentation banners) is not rocket science… I’m very careful to optimize bitmap graphics, convert text to paths, etc… I am definitely *NOT* pushing PS or AI to their limits, not even close. This "bleeding edge" dual-proc, dual-monitor Dell rig, combined with the latest Adobe offerings, runs far slower than the PC I used five years ago to do pretty much the same thing.
Frankly, if I was charging by the hour, I wouldn’t mind so much. But this is a very high-volume environment, so I don’t have the luxury of watching the hourglass spin for five minutes just to move a line segment an inch to the left.

Start by turning off hyperthreading. Your system apparently has multiple cores. Hyperthreading potentially allows the operating system to schedule processes in a highly inefficient manner.
Adam, thanks for your input…
….unfortunately, that’s something I tried, and it didn’t seem to make any difference.
Yes, I have an issue with first boot of the day. Two other computers are the same Dell 380 all software is the same with the exception of them not having photoshop CS & CS2 or dual monitors.
Well, I re-formatted the system, and only installed the basics. All seems okay so far. I will let you know.
Maybe all that pre-installed junk from Dell is actually the issue.
WebAdmin: In post #20 the serial number is showing. Please delete tout-suite.
Well, things are much better now, but I still have one issue.
When I close PS it kind of crashes. But only when I close it.
Any ideas?
I’ve had some hangs, crashes, and other strange behavior on a dual-Opteron system. I also applied the CS2 multiprocessor plugin update with no improvement. I found this Microsoft XP patch that sure sounds interesting. The wording is a bit vague as to whether it applies to machines with two physical chips and/or dual-core chips, but proceed at your own risk:
<
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896256>
Computers that are running Windows XP Service Pack 2 and that are equipped with multiple processors that support processor power management features may experience decreased performance
I’m installing it today, if things stabilize I’ll let the forum know.
-Chris.
you read this part right chris?
However, this article and its associated private hotfix are not intended to resolve timing problems in games and other applications that run on AMD dual-core computers.
Yes, I saw it. However, the article doesn’t explictly say the fix is only for Intel CPUs, and the poster here has a Xeon. I didn’t want to hijack this thread into an AMD discussion. There is another fix <
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924441> that applies to AMD processors, but it’s a down-level version of the fix in this article. I figured applying this one will give me the older fix as well as the new one. The other thing is that the quote says "AMD dual-core computers" and my system is dual processor and dual core. So it still may be part of the solution.
I’ll start a new thread if things go well. It may take a few days to see if the instability is resolved.
-Chris.
figured applying this one will give me the older fix as well as the new one.
no i understand where you were coming from, i just wanted to say, just please be careful. you may wind up hosing your system with that patch as it’s replacing critical system files.
I figured applying this one will give me the older fix as well as the new one.
you can’t necessarily assume that. backup before you try it.
We have the exact same problem with our Dell 490. Illustrator keeps crashing or even corrupting files. Photoshop is sluggish. Very weird!
I assume it’s a hardware or software conflict. Dell uses a different version of Windows specially designed for it.
Did you find a solution?
Dell uses a different version of Windows specially designed for it.
That is completely untrue. All OEMs have a certain amount of customization they do such as browswer links and help files, but that’s it. Windows is Windows.
Bob
Some Xeons are C2D. check with Dell.
Also, like I said, I did a re-install and it now works without crashing, just on closing PS it kind of crashes, but only on closing the app.
I did not re-install all the default Dell sofwtare, just windows, and nessecary drivers.
he means core2duo brian. nice chip.
Velly nice chip indeed! The quads are equally nice, but cost an arm and a leg.
how about the intel 80 core <
http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9584_22-6158181.html>?
The chip is capable of producing 1 trillion floating-point operations per second, known as a teraflop. That’s a level of performance that required 2,500 square feet of large computers a decade ago.
I saw that! Not only 2500ft^2, but 1/2 megawatt to run, and 1/2 Megawatt to cool the building! This unit used….65W?
Not a product, however!
I’m finishing my contract this week. I may go back in a month.
nice to have options larry! π
I have my architectural shoots which may make the Intel moot. But it’s only 3 additional months. Still, it’s in the best period for shooting.
OT: but it does those trillions operations without floating point, and not in 128bits, like in current processors. So the numbers can mean a lot of things. Still, a nice proof of concept.
Brian, what do you mean by "kind of crashes?" Does it give you an error message? does it want to send a crash log to microsoft?
This may sound strange, but try turning off Windows Explorer’s view thumbnails in the folders where you work on/store images.
Is it just me or is this thread being hi-jacked? LOL!!!
Brian, I was half on topic on my post, I’ll restate that part: what do you mean by "kind of crashes?" Does it give you an error message? does it want to send a crash log to microsoft?
Lawrence, see: Anandtech coverage: <
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2925& ;p=3>
"Although the chip itself is capable of processing over one trillion floating point operations per second, don’t be fooled by the numbers; these aren’t 128-bit FP operations but rather single-precision FP operations. "
Even in "32 bits" processors, some units work at a higher precision.
Thanks, Pierre. I hadn’t seen the Anandtech article yet.
You have to add this quote to yours to fully explain the process Intel implemented for this experimental chip:
"The real focus here isn’t on the floating point throughput of the array of tiles; instead, the primary objective is to work on the network that connects the tiles together."
It seems they accomplished that, with VLL (Very Large Leap!)
Guys, this is all fascinating, but there are a number of people subscribing to this thread because they are encountering problems that they want to fix. Can we stay on topic from now on, please?
PEC…
I can’t speak for Brian, but in my case, I don’t have "crashes," blue screen, or anything of that nature. Not to say they haven’t happened — they have, and I’ve lost a lot of work as a result — but my main complaint is the "lag" issue.
There are just times — for some reason, ALWAYS on deadline — when Illustrator slows to a crawl (or "lags" if you will) when I’m performing VERY simple operations (modifying text, for example, or moving a line segment over to the right a couple of pixels). When it lags, I either get an hourglass for an interminably long time, or the selection tool turns white (like the direct selection tool) until Illustrator finishes doing whatever it’s doing.
I generally have Illustrator and Photoshop running at all times, sometimes in conjunction with Bridge or InDesign. I posted my specs earlier in the thread.
Thanks
Closer to topic, but still off. π
Brian:
I have had the same problem (indeterminate lag in response to arbitrary actions) with PS and illustrator.
I have chased the problem extesively looking for a solution and acted on a good variety of recomendations.
I fear that the solution is to forget about it, redeploy your present PC to some other use, buy a new PC and start over.
The probelm is deep seated, forget trying to correct it, it isn’t your installation, it’s your hardware/bios/motherboard. There are motherboards which WILL NOT run PS satisfactorily!
This sounds like a very crappy response but it’s the only one that works for me. If you time is valuable to you, you will come the same conclusion; if not now, later.
Good Luck!
Thanks for the post. The user is okay with the current state of her system. A fresh re-install took care of most issues.
I did not re-install and Dell applications, just drivers. Anyway, its all good now.
Cheers
