Using the Pen tool or Quick Mask makes many entries in the History Palette. These can eat up much of my ability to retreat. Normally when I finish with one of these tools I either want all of it or none. Is there a way to collapse/combine all these entries into one history step so I don’t use up my history palette with one activity?

You could make a "Snapshot" before using the pen tool, then another one afterwards. Would that do what you are asking?

Make snapshots periodically, for example before you begin one of your long sessions on one tool.
