If I take a 500K JPG and save it to web reduce width pixells to 200 wide and medium quality I get a JPG of about 10-25K

If I do a batch process of JPGs the same size at 72dpi and reduce to 200pix wide I get a JPG of about 70k

How do I set up a batch to get the same as save for web function

Elements 2.0

Part of what you are seeing might be attributed to save-for-web’s removal of EXIF which is generally about 50 KB. If that’s the case I’m not sure it can be done since the save as option doesn’t allow removal of EXIF.

Maybe you’re right, but I find it hard to believe that EXIF adds 50K. You know how much you can write in a 50K .txt file?
ICC is about 2k, I know. You can see that with SFW, toggling it on and off.

My guess is that "medium" on Save As, and "medium" (50%?) in SFW just aren’t doing the same thing.

Also, if you’re on a Mac, the Mac resource fork adds to the file size. Save for Web strips off the resource fork which can be sizable (icon etc.).

I just tried a standard "Save As" and selected JPEG Medium and then set the slider for "6" on a scale of 1 to 12 and the file came out at 348KB. The same image saved using "Save for Web..", selecting JPEG Medium and then sliding to 50% resulted in a file of 256KB. The first picture has a miniature of itself as the icon and the second uses the system generic JPEG icon. Also, the first’s default "opener" is PSE2 and the second’s is Mac’s Preview.

SFW’s default medium is 30%, and the standard "Save As" uses 5 out of 12. Seems they can’t even be consistant with the nomenclature!

EXIF often contains a small thumbnail as well. If I’m not mistaking there the standard calls for a 65KB limit on EXIF info. In PSP I can save with or without EXIF and with all settings staying equal it’s between 45KB and 54KB for the info in my camera using EXIF 2.2

Correction of last post. The limit is 64 KB not 65 KB unless you add a second APP2 segment (whatever that is). The following linked page has a link to both EXIF 2.1 and 2.2 specifications.

Did not realize that a thumbnail could actually be part of EXIF also. Still seems to be a quite wasteful standard.
I mean, you can have several pages of single spaced ASCII text and a thumbnail in a lot less than 64K.

But thanks for the elaboration.

It really depends on the context, for example with an 18 MB file the percentage that is EXIF is negligible say compared to a 100 KB file.. It came up in another forum when someone complained about the wasted KB when trying to save photos for web. He didn’t realize he had the option to keep it or delete it in PSP’s JPEG Optimizer. I would like to see Photoshop and Elements offer the option in save for web to keep EXIF data as it is often needed when doing example photos for someone. Does anyone know if this feature was added in CS’s save for web?
