I will let the photographer speak for himself. The following was taken from his profile page.

For the past 33 years, I’ve been teaching photographic
communication as well as pursuing my passion for travel photography. I am director of The Douglis Visual Workshops in Phoenix, Arizona, and have been training organizational photojournalists and photo-editors in visual literacy since 1971. I am also now offering individual instruction to hobbyists and travel photographers in the basics of digital photography and photo-editing. To receive an information packet describing these tutorial workshops in digital photography, contact me at

This collection of galleries, entitled "Travel Photography: Communicating with Pictures," is intended as a "cyber-book" on photographic expression. It contains nearly 200 of my favorite images, mostly selected from the portfolios of digital travel narratives I’ve posted at worldisround.com. http://worldisround.com/home/pnd1/index.html

Instead of explaining how I made these photos in terms of their technical standards and techniques, I show them to you as examples of how I use a camera to express my feelings and ideas about what I encounter on my travels. I hope that this "cyber-book" can help you to express your own ideas in your own photography, explaining how to interpret, rather than just describe, what we see before us. I look forward to adding new examples periodically, and I welcome your comments and questions.

Thanks for visiting my galleries.

Phil is a frequent visitor at dpreview.com. I found it interesting that he has taken to travelling with only a Canon G2, and more recently, a G5 as his only cameras. No tripod, etc. I believe he does this do be unobtrusive and more spontaneous. Phil is always very generous with his help on the dp forum.

Thanks! Great photography!
We’ve been to some of these places, but never saw such astounding photos. This guy is super.

Strange way of spelling Douglis, as my maiden name is Douglass. (Great grandparents from Scotland)

I will look thru the entire album tonight,

Mark: I should do anywhere nearly so well with my G2……(sigh)….

Well now Chuck… travel to some of these places with photography as your primary focus, shoot a ton of photos and, who knows, you might narrow the gap.

I know I also give a ‘sigh’ when I see so many talented photographers.
