James,

Do you have links to any background on that story? It doesn’t say anyghing, really, about the genesis of the whole thing.

Aside from the obvious claim – patent infringement – did you find any additional information? Are they claiming they developed JPEG or JPEG 2000?

EDIT for newsreaders : Here’s what the JPEG committee said when this started back in 2002 :

It has always been a strong goal of the JPEG committee that its standards should be implementable in their baseline form without payment of royalty and license fees, and the committee would like to record their disappointment that some organisations appear to be working in conflict with this goal.

I don’t "feel" for them.

"The lawsuit, which was actually brought by Forgent’s subsidiary Compression Labs Inc., is an attempt to "maximize shareholder value"

Sorry about not answering questions to a thread I started. I went to bed soon after posting and did no further research. I see you found your answers.

Have A Nice Day, 🙂

Ah, yes, "maximize shareholder value!" I think the between the lines intrepretation is "increase salaries and bonuses." Also, isn’t it interesting that it comes now?

Sure looks like an "end around" play to me.

Isn’t it amazing how a bunch of lawyers can really create virtual havoc? After all these years that JPEG has been in widespread use, it seems incredible to me that they could get anybody to pay them anything. When Sony caved, it gave them a BIG war chest to continue their campaign. Shame on Sony!
