I know there are many here who use the full version of Photoshop in addition to Elements. My question has to do with the pen tool for making selections. It has been one of the tougher tools to get halfway proficient with and I’m wondering are there real advantages to using it. Is the ability to make complex selections and use vector mask worth the time of learning this seemingly complex tool? What are the advantages, if any, of a vector mask over any other form of mask? TIA

Definitely. And the pen tool is really not all that complicated, once you get the hang of it.

How does the vector mask differ from a channel mask?

If you need to make a very precise selection, the pen tool will help you. Also, you might want to make a selection and turn into a custom shape. Again, the pen tool will help you.

One of the advantages is that as long as the selection remains in its vector form, it’s scalable without degradation (jaggy edges) and you can edit the anchor points at will (add and delete them, adjust the angles, etc)

But, the pen tool isn’t only for selections. It’s a great tool to apply brush strokes on a precise path. It’s also much more easy to draw stuff with it than it is with any other tool in Photoshop (unless you’re gifted with a Wacom Tablet, that is!)
