I took an online course at lynda.com that showed an automated way to make a gallery in Photoshop. I did try deleting the symbols in the html. It’s a month later and I forget why that didn’t work. I’ll try it again.

Maybe you have a character problem in your XML used by the gallery, like this other post <http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?14@@.59b61cbb/0>. Check your image file names for bad characters.
