I have almost completed my new website. I am hoping some of you will take the time to view it and let me know what you think. Please let me know what you think of the layout and navigation. If you find it difficult to navigate please advise as how to improve keeping in mind I have limited skills in this matter. All I have left to do is add the shopping cart/paypal info. TIA

The previous and next thumbnails appear slightly outside of my viewing window, on a maximized Safari window, running at 1024 x 768. It would be nice if the originals were, perhaps, a little smaller to accommodate the thumbnails or that the thumbnails were put both at left or right of the main picture.

The rest is very clear !

Thank you Ray. I was actually thinking of removing the thumbnails in question since the arrows on top serve the same purpose.

James,

I don’t know if you’ve changed things since Ray posted his remarks. I have no trouble viewing the site at all on a 17"crt at 1024×768.

One question, can you tell me the reason behind the "mattes and more" url being doubled?

Just curious.

I have removed the thumbnails that Ray was referring to. Dick that is exactly why I wanted some feedback, that url mistake just slipped right past me. Thanks for the help.

James, try the link yourself and see what shows up in your browser. It still is doubled! Must be something mattes and more came up with. Weird.

I made the change on the page but when I access their page it shows up doubled as you know. That at least explains why I had it doubled to start with as I just did a copy/paste to acquire the url. Now that it is not doubled up it still opens the site but shows it as doubled in my browser. Strange indeed.

It isn’t you, Jim, it’s mattesandmore, the way they have their site set up. If you go to www.mattesandmore.com, you just get a parent directory. www.mattesandmore.com/mattesandmore.com IS the right address.

Very nice site, incidentally.

Jim,
It is 7:24 a.m. EST here, and whatever you have done seems to have corrected things. The navigation works well and everything shows up within the confines of my screen.

Jim,

Very nice! I would suggest to take the date and size info out from underneath the thumbnails. You took your portrait photo in front of a mirror? You may want to flip the image horizontally. Just a thought. 🙂

Jim,

Absolutely no difficulty navigating and I tried my best to make something fail. Very solid. You should also know that with a dialup 46.6 connection it is very fast. That’s probably partially due to light AM traffic but rest assured no one is going to give up because of speed.

I use AdSubtract to speed surfing. I noted that it had blocked one background so I turned it off, cleared cache and history and tried again. No apparent slowdown when background allowed.

Here’s wishing you success.

I will have to go and talk to them today and see what is going on, I have never seen an url like that. It’s funny I never knew they were here until a few months ago. The place is about 6 miles from me and they stock every color and kind of matt imaginable. She said they cut and ship over 40,000 mattes daily. Thanks for taking the time to help.

Hi, James,

Asking my opinion of something written is like waving the proverbial red flag in front of a bull’s nose 🙂 Hopefully, you won’t consider me a total opinionated pain in the butt with these thoughts . . . (especially since I don’t have my own website for others to critique!)

Although the picture of you is really well done and I think it adds a nice personal touch to your site, I also think adding one of the pictures you’re selling to both the first page and the pricing page will grab the viewer’s eye and keep the potential buyer interested in the photographs you’re selling while reading the presented information.

I was a bit confused with the pricing page. At first I thought the numbers (1., 2., 3., etc.) referred to individual numbered pictures, then discovered that the pictures weren’t numbered. Then I decided that if the picture was described as an 8×10, then I needed to locate the prices for the 8×10’s. (Can I assume that the 8×10 White Cow can’t be purchased in a 5×7 size?) If the 1-2-3 numbers preceding the sizes on the pricing page have no direct link to particular pictures, then I think you should leave those leading numbers off.

I would like to suggest a 3-column format for your pricing chart (instead of your single column) to make it easier to decipher the costs. If buyers can purchase different sizes of each picture (dot leaders ONLY there to push the columns apart in this Forum; wish the Message Box were WYSIWYG):

Size…….Print Only…..Matted Print
4×6……….$12…………….$22
5×7……….$18…………….$30
8×10………$25…………….$40

If you’re selling only the six pictures and buyers can’t purchase different sizes of each picture, then I would suggest listing the names of the pictures and their sizes instead of the sizes only on the pricing page:

Picture…………………Print Only….Matted Print
White Cow (8×10)………….$25……………$40
Three Deer (5×7)………….$18……………$30

For consistency’s sake, I would suggest always putting the smaller size-number first (e.g., 4×6 vs. 6×4). On your gallery page, you list the Three Deer as a 5×7 and the Cabin as a 7×5. On your pricing page, you list the smaller pictures as 6×4 but the larger pictures as 5×7 and 8×10.

Since your prices don’t include cents like $22.50, you could drop the ".00" on each one ($22) — makes the amounts look smaller 🙂

Will your prices include shipping costs? Any discount for multiple purchases?

I’m big on "active" vs. "passive" voice (but this may not be your style and that’s okay!) If you’d like bolder, though, I think you need to "toot your horn" and skip: ["Golden Road" is the first photograph I have had published] and dive right in with: ["Golden Road" was published by (newspaper) ..] Brag a bit! No need to tell people that you’re new to this.

In place of: [If you are ever in the vicinity of Western Colorado be sure and make time to visit Cedaredge] maybe something bolder like [Traveling to Western Colorado? Be sure to venture over to the charming town of Cedaredge nestled on the southern slopes of scenic Grand Mesa. Drop in at the Apple Shed’s aGalleria where you can view my photos and …]

In your sentence, …along with many other artist…, I believe the word "artist" needs to be "artists."

Good luck on your site, James! I wish I were bold enough to do something like this!! Maybe you could show me how you did this when I get up your way, if I’m still invited 🙂

Of course you are still invited to visit and soon I hope. I appreciate all of your input and changes will be made. As for the pricing that will all be replaced with shopping cart as soon as I figure it out.

Goodness, you must have read my message while I was doing one of a half dozen edits 🙂 Couldn’t get the column data to line up. I’ll bet there’s a way to do this without periods! There was snow on the Bookcliffs this morning. I’ll bet that surprised the tourists on I-70!

It’s been snowing here off and on all morning. I am working on some of your suggestions now. I was surprised at all of the help that I have received with this, several have e-mailed tips as well. We are lucky to have such talented and sharing people in this forum. When you get a chance e-mail me the names of your mother and sister here in town, my wife and I are curious to see if we know them.
