I suspect you may have problems with the .art extension as there are more than one forms so it is not standardized.

ARTXara Studio drawing
ARTCanon Crayola art
ARTClip Art
ARTRay Tracer file
ARTFirst Publisher Raster graphic
ARTAOL Image file compressed using the Johson-Grace compression algorithm

Very likely are AOL .art files, the most common type.

Did you download them? If so did you use AOL brower? If so, there is an option re file compression somewhere in the browser; or download with Internet Explorer as JPEG or BMP.

Or open the .art files from your hard drive in Internet Explorer and save as JPEG or BMP.

But once you have them as .art, they’ve been even further compressed and are worse than the originals.
