I have a photo in which I’d like to add contrast to the whites of the eyes for effect, what is the best technique for doing this? Here’s what I mean

I like to make a duplicate layer set to screen mode (or to multiply to darken) then erase all of the dupe layer except the whites. Vary the opacity as needed or repeat the process for more lightening.

This is your image with one layer of screen mode applied to the eye whites, 100% opacity: <ahref=" http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1yuoyfqGTr16V4y71Y yQJ3pccFWaJA"/>

Or, create an adjustment layer, such as levels, in screen mode. Click OK.
Invert the mask.
Paint in the desired areas with a white brush.

Another:

Select the whites with the marquee tool, feather by one or two pixels, go to Hue Saturation and adjust the sliders. Usually starting with saturation reduction then light/dark sliders (usually lighter), sometimes followed by hue adjustment to taste.

YMMV.

Looks to me like you are bringing the cyans out of their eyes and not the whites. do you really want the blue cast?

I wondered about that too, Donald. Here’s a two minute adjustment with a plugin (PictoColor’s EditLab Pro).

Thanks for the hints, I eventually did it by creating levels and saturation adjustment layers, and painting on the mask, <http://yaroslavvb.com/temp/v2.jpg>

J Maloney is on the right track, Yaroslav. The poor guy in your version looks like he just woke up in the morgue. :/ That’s one nasty cyan cast you have there.

J Malooney, that’s quite a dramatic change, can you tell me which tool you used for this?

Yar:

Mine was not a 2 minute change. I don’t have the layer file in front of me (but will send it to you, hit me at photoshop.forums —-at — gmail dot com). Basically I neutralized the blacks and whites to kill most of the cast. Then I worked on the midtones a little, but kept them pretty blue for what I thought was that up-all-night feel. But there are probably 20 layers or more of edits.
