Can any one explain?

All of the sudden my photo shop isnt working right. When I add a new layer its not white like a page its grey and white checkers. When I paste something I cant change the size of it. My click and drag is gone. Im using the right tool so thats not it. I didnt touch anything so I dont know what could be wrong?

its not white like a page its grey and white checkers.

That indicates that your background is transparent, that’s all. When you use the New Image Dialog (Control N), just go to Background contents and choose white, if you so desire. Personally, I prefer a transparent background to start new images, but, that’s why they make 33 flavors of ice cream I suppose.
