Equalizing contrast/brightness

I took a picture of a painting in daylight–no flash. There’s increasingly more contrast and darker values from left to right. Is there an easy adjustment to equalize this in PS CS3?

Use a gradient Layer Mask in a Curves Adjustment Layer.
