Barbara Cole is the featured artist in the upcoming May issues of the Canadian photographic magazine "Photolife". There is very good article on her rise to success and accompanying this is some of her stunning images. It is a great story about a self trained artist. Barbara has a wonderful line about the values of photography in it "I came to be an artist simply by taking pictures"

1st. Barbara’s first addition to the latest photography challenge and some of Jodi’s work in previous challenges brought to mind a Canadian photographer whose work I admire very much.

2nd. I ran across this site called Beyond Compare: Women Photographers on Beauty. The tour and exhibition in Canada will gather donations for the National Eating Disorders Information Centre.

3rd. I can’t remember if this young woman’s poignant website has been discussed here before, but it has been updated recently. Her story and pictures from her motorbike rides through the Chernobyl ‘dead zone’ are sad and somewhat chilling.

We had a great dinner in Los Angeles tonight, but I was complaining all the way home about the poor service. Then I saw the photos and haunting narrative by Elena on the angelfire.com site. And we think we have problems.

John, thank you for providing these links.
I really enjoyed the Barbara Cole images; she is a great artist. the "Dove collection" is very nice too, but I fell really silent on viewing the "dead zone tour".

BTW, has any one a clue how to obtain those "milky" colours in PSE like in the Polaroids by Barbara Cole? I love these effects.

Lee,

I am not sure how she did it but assume you cannot do it with one filter only. However one filter sprang to mind that may have been part is the "poster" filter. It does something to the edges to make the image more poster like (obviously). I believe it rounds the edges more and the colours are more saturated, but when you overdo it you get some distortion that looks similar to what is used here. Apart from that I believe she also uses another layer that she allows to shine through from the "back". This would give you the overall creamy look.
Why don’t you just ask her?

Robert, she worked on Polaroid SX70 film, according to her website. You can work on these images by means of pressure on the backside, like scratching etc.

I wish I could imitate the tonal quality of this film, but I don’t know how to describe the difference.
Polaroid films are pretty expensive, you have to practise a lot and the outcome often is quite uncertain. If I could produce this "Polaroid look" in PSE it would save me quite some time and money.
