Should the new format described here at
an MS link < http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=285 EEFFD-D86C-48C3-AB93-3ABD5EE7F1CE&mg_id=10051&displa ylang=en>

become practical, workable and do-able are there ways to invoke the new format into previous versions of Photoshop?

I doubt it since Adobe doesn’t generally release updates for old versions. That aside I doubt many will use this format. There is a much bigger trust issue with Microsoft and its closed formats than there is for Adobe and their DNG format which is open and DNG isn’t very well supported. But, then it isn’t all it is cracked up to be anyways. You still have to wait for it to be updated to get the most from the images from a new camera.

On the other hand, it would probably just require a file format plugin and that may very well be usable in earlier versions.

Through a plugin, yes.

There is some discussion on the mailing list <http://www.asmail.be/msg0054634987.html> whether libtiff <http://www.remotesensing.org/libtiff/> can/should support this non-standard variation of TIFF.

Is there that much of a need for a new continuous tone format. I can’t remember the last time I used a continuous tone image.

Unfortunately, that format is a mess.

LibTiff shouldn’t mess with it.

Still, it would be pleasant to know if a new format hit the scenes whether (in general or in principle) that attempts to support it were possible without having to purchase a new version of Photoshop.

Heck? Maybe even the proponents of the new format could make it accessible via plugins from an SDK?

I would guess that if Adobe was so included to support it that it would be after many years to see if it is DOA or a champion race horse. From what Chris said it will probably be DOA. I don’t think Adobe should waste time developing format plug-ins for every little format. Especially when these new ones don’t seem to be all that useful, interesting, remarkable or great.

Someone with the Adobe PS SDK will download the Microsoft HD Photo SDK and create a plugin for it, just as people have done for other oddball formats. The MS SDK is royalty-free, but requires that any programs created from it be licensed and have a EULA at least as restrictive as that for the MS converter, but that only means that there needs to be a free registration and a click-wrap. If the technology takes off, and photo professionals need it, Adobe will build it in.

You don’t use photos then? Just a few fixed colors?

Easy to use graphics effects:

And especially not for old versions of the program. You can’t expect an old version to do new things.
