Stroke a path

I’m running CS and I’ve created a path with the pen tool I’m trying to stroke. Every time I hit the stroke command it only puts stroke around the anchor points of my path and not the entire path – I end up with a nice constellation of little dots rather than lines. Anyone know what I’m doing wrong?

In the ‘Brush Tip Shape’ section of the Brushes Palette, make sure the ‘Spacing’ box is checked.
