I have been trying to restore an old image that had an oval frame. I get the image to look good but I cannot get the exposed area to match the area that was covered by frame. I have read articles for restoring but I have not seen anything covering this situation.
Any help would be appreciated.

I got a pretty decent likeness of faded and unfaded part simply by setting the Black Point of a curves-layer with an oval selection in one of the darkest spots of the anorak.
But You will probably have to clone-stamp over the edge between the two areas; getting a mask to fit perfectly for such a soft edge seems unlikely.
Any further corrections should be stacked on top of that result.
