Try this if you are on a G5
Right click on any file for the file extension you wish to open eg .psd tiff etc. in photoshop. Select get info and select the program you wish it to open with. Click change all button and all files with that extension will open in the selected program. Repeat for each file exteision type you wish to use in future. Saves opening from within the program.
This does not seem to work in Classic 9 mode on a G5 though using Adobe Illustrator.
