Subtle gradation in shades of grey on white background

I am trying to achieve subtle gradations of gray tones on white back as in drop shadow effects. As a paint in or over gray/white or white/gray I often get a defined line at the transition area. I have tried layering and different blend modes with no good results at this time.

Any one out there have the answer?
