I’m new to Photoshop CS. I have been unable to add text to my pictures. I have several text books & took a class yesterday & it seems like a simple thing to do. BUT when I try to add the text to my pictures, it does not appear in the image. I DO SEE IT in the tex layer pallette though. Maybe I have a preference that needs to be changed.
HELP!

Just a guess as to the explanation for this strange phenomenon, which always gets cured with a tool reset.

If you open an existing file with text layers, I think the Text Tool can reset itself to the settings in that file and then these settings stick after a restart, causing strange behaviour if the next use of the Text Tool is in a file with different resolution/point size.
