What is the correct procedure for installing a new Hard Drive to use as a photoshop scratch disk?

First follow the instructions in your G5 Setup Guide to install the new HD itself in the spare bay in your computer.

Then use Disk Utility to erase (or zero it); and Partition it into two parts.

I suggest that you allot about 60GB of space to the first section.

Then make that first partition your Scratch space by setting that option in Photoshop Prefs..

Install the hard drive, format it, tell Photoshop to use it….

I would not get a hard drive smaller than 500GB better yet 750GB

I would prefer to have two faster smaller drives in a RAID O, rather than one large drive, if it is only going to be used for scratch. If you are working on larger files, over 500mg or so, a faster scratch drive can really come in handy. I think Barefeats had some test done comparing a single vs srtiped RAID O drives for scratch disk.

Well, so would I; but some folks are hobbled by machines that will only take two internal drives, the main boot drive and another one.
