Every time my new Elements 2.0 comes up, I get a message saying that my monitor profile "appears to be defective" and suggesting that I rerun my monitor calibration software. It’s a VAIO computer and Envision monitor. Is this something I should care about? I just hit "use anyway," and everything seems to work perfectly…

Carol,
Whatever monitor profile your system is using is probably not completely compatible with the Adobe Gamma Loader. I’d suggest using the Adobe Gamma Utility to create a new , compatible profile. Here is an Adobe Techdoc on the subject, as well as Ian Lyons’ tutorial on using the Adobe Gamma Profiling utility.

Brent, which profile do you start with ? Adobe RGB ? Well, reason i’m asking is because this is what i’m currently using with my buggered up monitor. When i click on the Adobe RGB it automatically comes up as ‘ Coloreal ICM ‘ because that’s what my current monitor uses ( I’m guessing they are two of the same )…I’m asking because the new monitor I ordered will probably have something other than what i’m used to. I’m assuming ADOBE RGB is the correct profile to start with…or is it ?

Most tutorials suggest starting with sRGB, Jodi.

Apparently, the sRGB profile was developed to closely match a "typical" color monitor. Ian Lyons’ tutorial on the subject suggests the same thing. Starting with the manufacturer’s original profile is also completely acceptable, and that’s the only way to go on an LCD display using Adobe Gamma.

I don’t suppose a corrupt monitor profile could be causing your current monitor problems? Just a thought because I have no clue if that is possible.

I knew you had ordered a nice new monitor but I was thinking two monitor system if it could easily be fixed. From reading what you had said about the profiles it seems as if the profile is corrupt or you OS is reading them incorrectly.

ya James, i wish it were that simple. That had already crossed my mind and i had already fiddled with profiles a couple of weeks ago. It made no difference. The current monitor i am using only had a one year warranty and since i pushed it in high res and high color bit over the past 3 years …not to mention color calibration every so often…I’m lucky it lasted as long as it did. I’m not complaining but of course that’s only because I got a new one on the way.

Jodi my desktop will be 4 years old come March, I live with my fingers crossed.
I had to buy a new laptop for work so that threw me off of my every 3 year replacement schedule. This desktop may have to see five before all is said and done. I sometimes have PS 7, PS Elements and PSP 8 all open and churning at the same time and only running 256 megs of Ram and she just keeps on keeping on.

Jodi and James

Monitors seem to go when you least expect it. Up to about a month ago I had two monitors for this system. Now before you go "Rich B*tch" My main monitor is a very good one but only 15" as I went for quality over size. My second monitor was a Sony Trinitron that I picked up from an estate sale for $50. While some like a double monitor system I never got use to it. A month ago I gave it away to someone that needed it more than I did.

Now a month later my NEC is starting to show colour fringes in the bottom left hand corner ….. soooooooooooooooo guess what is in my future.
