Strange. Transparent becomes hard and solid when saving…

Hiya, I have got Adobe Photoshop CS Version 8

I wanted to save a piece of work just as it is, but Photoshop has been really stubborn lately.

Here is the first step,

I create a nice little abstract.

Secondly:

I save it.

Now it comes up with a little box telling me to choose some options. No matter how I choose the combinations, it is still so dense! Its not the same. Why has it become so dense? Compare the preview one and the original.

Preview off:

See? Its perfect when the preview is off. Well of course.

I doubt it has got anything to do with Normal or Interlace:

And its not just when it saves. When I open it with Windows Fax viewer:

And even when I open the pic in Word or Powerpoint, it still is so hard and solid, I want it to be nice and flimsy like in the original! Not hard and black and cramped.

Any help appreciated. ^^

Think it might be because .jpg doesn’t support transparency? Try .png …

Not sure what you are doing. Are you saving in gif format? Gif does not support the kind of translucency (antialiasing) you have in that image.

Is this for web use? You can try png, but not all browsers support it.

No, GIF does support transparency coz Ive tried it. And it works. I also saved as a .GIF file this time. I did not save a a JPEG file 😛

ED’s got it, Ron.

The GIF format only supports a single level of transparency, no translucency.

The only web friendly format that does is PNG-24, but that is not directly supported in I.E. versions < the 7 beta. You have to use the AlphaImageLoader code to support them in IE.

Look at indexed color dialog

The number of colors is only 2.

That is because the pixels on the layer are ALL 0R/0G/0B, they only vary in transparency at the pixel level (not to be confused with layer opacity)

Go into curves and run the eyedropper over the wispiest parts, the info will read 0R/0G/0B just like the darkest parts. Scroll the secondary readout to opacity and that readout will change when you run the eyedropper around.

If png will not work for you, the only way to get the translucency is to put whatever the background color of the web page is behind the wisps… THEN you can save as a Jpeg.
