I’m in the market for a new PC, under $1,000. I use PS extensively for editing digital photos and want to buy a computer that will do a good job running PS 7.
What features should I get, without going overboard on price?

Processor?
RAM?
Hard Drive?
Type of Video Card?
Monitor?
Do I need a DVD writer?
Other Features?…
What computer brand?

Any info or experiences will be appreciated.

A thousand bucks, huh? OK…

Processor?
As fast as you can afford.
RAM?
As much as you can afford
Hard Drive?
As big and as many as you can afford
Type of Video Card?
Any good 2D card with at least 64MB of VRAM will do. ATI and Matrox seem to be preferred.
Monitor?
At least a 19", preferably with separate color gun controls
Do I need a DVD writer?
Want one, yes. Need one, no.
Other Features?
More RAM. A CD writer for archiving.
What computer brand?
Your pick, or better yet, build your own.
