I have 2 computers where I can’t get bridge to run, it just exits with the "has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Has it ever run? Have you updated it from the Adobe website? (It was at version 1.0.3 last November) This update addressed a lot of the problems seen in the earlier release. It is also very resource hungry.
