I have an old photograph that has sat in an old wallet in a shed for about 10 years. Consequently it has suffered by adopting an orange hazy splodge!

I have scanned it in on request and am looking to remove the splodge and generally bring it back to life.

Admittedly I am no expert in these matters and although my knowledge stretches to sharpening and improving colour contrast I am lost on how to efficiently remove the splodges.

Any of you experts will to share ideas how I could do it.

Here is a link to the image saved as a high quality jpeg for you to see what I mean.

I tried this way using Elements…eyedropper to sample a good part of her face then put the brush into color mode to paint away the stains……result?…dark grey blotches where I painted!…how is it done?

You can remove a certain amount with adjustment layers but I think there will still be a certain amount of ‘real’ work to be done. Though I’d be interested to see just how far anyone else can get with layers…

Hey Ben

I didn’t realize that you were such a "professional" and will not go out of your way for anyone. And personally, you don’t have to. Now, this gentleman has an old photo which is, by all means, pretty much ruined. Some of us here are willing to try and clean it up for him. Whether it be because they have the skill and knowledge to do it or whether they just want to do it for the practice. As far as anyone knows, that pic may have sentimental value for this guy and may be the only picture of this person that exists. I just don’t see why you have a problem with anyone willing to touch up the photo for him. The way I see it, you can either put up or shut up. We don’t need to hear from you if you’re not interested in helping. To be totally honest with you, I chose to touch up the photo for free and I make my living doing this stuff. You wan to know something else? It’s none of your goddamm business !!! Dig?

I went into the channels and selected the cleanest channel and deleted the other 2. I then converted to Grayscale and still had some cleaning up to do. I did this with the cloning tool. I found that some of the details were missing so i just brought them back with the burn tool. I also used the dodge tool on some areas which were a little too dark for my taste. and that’s about it !!!

well!! i went to the replace color and selected the ugly brown and changed the color of it then i unsharped masked it the ran it through the dream suite filter to soften it and add the color then i unsharped masked it again and re ran it back through the filter again then cropped off the crappy edges and made probably a hundred hue saturation / brightness contrast adjustments along with numerous other tricks i know is that enough for ya bonehead!!

Dig?

But then, how would you know? You probably wouldn’t recognize your own reflection. You’re so stupid you sit on the TV and watch the couch. Ben

After reading your last post I decided to take a look at both my and your work….My conclusion is that after you pointed out all those flaws on mine I realized that your work is so much better. This has gone on long enough. I’m sorry if I insulted or offended you. My original post had absolutely nothing to do with this stupid competition. All I said was that if you want to help someone, you do and if you don’t, you don’t. And that it isn’t necessary to put down the people that do want to help. So basically, I’ll be the bigger person here and apologise to you publicly. I hope no offense is taken…I have no hard feelings….did I mention that your work is better?

If anyone here has touch-ups and the like to have done, please ask Ben to do them for you….He’s the BEST !!!

By the way, you have to admit that it was getting really funny, right? PEACE

god I hate when people cave on me like this. and if you were to have any confidence in what people are saying you would of realized that when I said can I play too huh can I?? I actually wanted to play with you. not in the pee pee sense but in the game of photo restoration. I was in no way trying to be snotty and a too good. I do photo restoration every day so I have become good at it and I love to help people when they need it . but thanks for the opinions and I hope I didnt insult you or your nationality too much. I would say yours was the second best of all of them though. no really. "DosBoss57" wrote in message

I had good luck starting with the red channel. Then I used the a and b channels of Lab mode as masks for two curve layers to remove the splotches, plus an overall curve to adjust highlight and shadow.

There are a couple of marks left, but I wanted to see what could be done with curves alone.

Results are at http://geigy.2y.net/Tutorials/LabRepairDiscoloration

With your permission, I’d like to make this into a tutorial. —

The reason I put up a page with peoples retouches on it was by request earlier on in the thread. I presumed this was requested because people were intrested on how well this could be done.

Dig?
