How does one create a new swatch library from scratch? So far all I can figure out is to open one of the existing libraries, remove the swatches one by one, and then add in the colors you want. This is extremely tedious and time consuming. There must be a better way.

PS 7 but I think the same in CS:

First go into Preset Manager and save the current Swatches palette if you want that palette back as is. Then CoomandA to select all and delete. Now you have a b;ank Swatches palette.

Make your colors with the Color Picker or the Color Palette. Using the Paint Bucket add each color to the palette. You can name them as you do this or if you prefer hold down Option to add them without getting the naming dialog.

When you have the palette you want you can save it from the flyout arrow in the Swatches palette or from the Preset Manager.

Another nice way of building a custom Swatches palette is to open an image that contains the colors you want to work with and Mode-change to Indexed Color/Adaptive.

Go to Image menu/Mode/Color Table…/Custom

Save the color table which appears with a descriptive name as an .aco file in Photoshop/Presets/Color Swatches.

You will now be able to load your new swatches in the Swatches palette.
