Hi Terri, I managed to do that underwater scene this morning that Bert Monroy showed us how to do on ‘ The Screen Savers’ show. Problem is, I went by memory since i could not find the tutorial listed anywhere on the sight. I’m not sure I did the ocean surface properly though. I remember how he used the ‘glass filter’ at full distortion and 200% on the gradient layer and then I moved the layer up and used ‘transform>perspective’. I’m not sure if i missed a step. I’m not sure if my image looks right. In my mind I’m thinking perhaps the ripples need to ‘look’ larger. Anyways, I know you said you taped the show….when you get a chance could you see if i missed a step.
If you missed anything I would not worry about it your is such a pleasing rendition Bert will have to watch his P&Q with you around. Here is the link that will get you the on line tutorial just to ease your mind about whether you missing some small thing or not.
Hi, Jodi. Just got back from an dental cleaning. From you posts, it looks like you got it all sorted out. Didn’t want you to think I was ditching your post. I bet you did a fab job on the underwater scene.
I don’t think it’s gonna be possible, because some friends are coming over. I don’t want to tell them it’s my birthday, I don’t like "imposing" on people..
Grant, you are a bad boy ! They are only bad omens if you went through an entire year without learning anything. …I know you were joking….I happen to hate birthdays…ONLY because i can’t blow $5000 on myself for toys…oh wait, better make it $20,000…those new SONY plasmas will take a big chunk out of that.
Jodi, I couldn’t resist. I tried the underwater tutorial and sent it in for the challenge. Certainly not as detailed as yours…or as good as your clown fish one, but it does include the clock. 😉
I tried one using the sample pic provided. It didn’t come out to badly but I seem to have a very discernible line where the top layer was moved up. Has anyone else had that problem, or did I just draw the water layer up to much?
Dick, how discernable is it ? What you can do is use a fat soft eraser at low opacity and erase some of the bottom off the top gradient ( the surface water gradient ). You did use the same color on the lower gradient right ?
Thank you Nancy and Wendy. I appreciate the positive feedback…whole heartedly…is that the way ya spell that ? who cares…you guys are great. I really enjoyed doing this one. The turtle must have a special symbolic meaning cause i kind of felt he was here with me….painting himself. He just came together.
Thanks for the tip about using a fat soft eraser at low opacity and erasing some of the bottom off the top gradient .. I had the same problem as Dick but your tip sorted it out just fine.
Went back and look at your handpainted turtle two more times. I still can’t believe what I was seeing. You are truly an artist of immense talent! The turtle is a symbol of health and longevity in oriental mysticism, and a suitable, if a slightly belated, offering to celebrate Ray’s birhtday.
Shan, that is absolutely marvelous ! I love this stuff. I do have a Native American book on Animal Medicine and here it says; ‘ the turtle is the oldest symbol for planet earth’…’goddess of energy and eternal Mother from which our lives revolve’…’ We are born of the womb of Earth, and to her soul our bodies will return’….’Turtle asks to be mindful of the cycle of give and take, to give back to Mother as she has given to us’….then it goes on to say ‘ If you have chosen the turtle symbol ( cards that came with the book but I never used ) you are being asked to honor the creative source within you. ….
Anyways, it’s funny that you came in here Shan and gave me your insights because i went to look for this book earlier today and got stuck doing something else….it was good that you reminded me.
What you can do is use a fat soft eraser at low opacity and erase some of the bottom off the top gradient ( the surface water gradient ).
Jodi, it’s tips like this that make this forum better than any tutorial or book. I’ve learned a lot about Elements since I bought it last summer, and it’s little things like this that I always overlook!
What a neat image! I must learn to do these with PSE, but here is the old fashioned way, diving in Belize. <http://www.pbase.com/image/24891837> This was taken with a disposible ‘weatherproof’ $10.00 camera back in ’95. Turtles swim faster than you can imagine, so any of our pictures of them are mostly always blurry. I sure must get going on my project to get my old U/W slides scanned in. Jane
Here is another that we took just snorkeling(we are too old to lug around all that heavy scuba gear any more). <http://www.pbase.com/image/2019859/large> I have hundreds of these slides to scan and catalog, but its so time consuming, that I never seem to get started. Jane
They are really old, old 35 mm slides. The big box of most of them is here in this house hopefully and some maybe in my brother’s house. I must get started on this project. Whenever I start to scan and look over old pictures, I always get sidetracked and spend hours just looking at them. But I must do this, and this winter is the time as the weather is cold and miserable. What better time for computer projects! Brings back neat memories, just looking at those old photos, such fun!
