Need to get a PC (already have a Mac). For opening and saving images, which of the two chips are faster for Photoshop use?

The less expensive Athlon 64.

The computers I am looking at are consumer priced, under $1000.

Athlon 64 machines give bigger bang for the buck than PIVs. Also make sure you get at least 1gb RAM.
In truth, even if you use a dual processor MAC, you may find increased performance on the PC for most PS tasks.
