Unlocking Layers

Can someone please explain how a layer can be UNLOCKED? I have been through tutorials regarding layers but cannot find anything on unlocking.
I am using version2, Photoshop Elements in Windows XP Pro. I’ll watch this formum or I woulod appreciate an e-mail to Thanks in advance.

Jerry, just double click on the little lock icon and it will prompt you to rename the ‘layer’.
