Is there a setting that we have not found yet, a hack to some PC-like ".ini" file, or an undiscovered mystical key combo that will open images so that their single layer is NOT a locked Background layer? Why can’t a jpeg or PDF simply open with its sole layer unlocked and named something creative like the file name or even "LAYER 0"?

Although the additional double-click-the-layer-and-hit-the-Return-key action is trivial when you’re working on a few images, when you’re processing several hundred screen captures – to choose some random example – it is a frustrating pain when you forget to do it and then can’t figure out at 3AM why you can’t color correct the blasted image.

If you can’t color-correct the blasted image, it’s not because the Background layer is locked—people have been color-correcting locked Background layers ever since Photoshop introduced layers.

You don’t have to hit the return key if you Option-double-click.

If you have a lot of them you could make an action "unflattening" them and saving as .psd which you can later open and process as you like. Or you could tie it to an F key and run it on each file as you open.

I’m sure there must be a scripting solution as well.

Jim,

As Bruce says…you can retouch the heck out of a locked background. And you can dupe the background (which is then an exact clone in an unlocked layer).
