You need to search and destroy the plug-in that Nikon created just to annoy Camera Raw users. See the Camera Raw forum’s FAQ. (Well, it seems that it is its main function, it does not do many other things)
Or simply use Nikon Capture for pre-processing,
save as TIFF 16 bits per channel and proceed by
PhS as usual. This is simple and safe.
I’m writing this after having read some hundred
contributions about this issue.
But if you’re truly believing in PhS ACR then
you should clean up your workflow according to
Pierre’s advice …(didn’t test it).

Just took a newly created .nef file to my wife’s computer running CS2 and Nikon View or Nikon Capture has ever been installed on that computer and the file will still not open in PS-CS2. So what might it be? I checked the Windows File association and it is set to open .nef files in Photoshop CS2.
Strictly a long shot Lee, but I just now installed PSCS2, and I’m opening NEFs from a D1X without any problems.
However, in the import dialog, it mentions ACR 3.0. And I believe the latest and greatest version of ACR is 3.1 and also that 3.1 is required for the D2X.
So if you have a moment to check the Adobe www site, see if you’re running the latest version of ACR. Could be your copy of PSCS2 shipped before Adobe released support for the DX2 in 3.1.

Art: That did it! I had run the Photoshop update and it found the Bridge update but not the ACR update! I find it interesting that the D2X has been out for about 3 months and the initial release of CS2 did not have this camera in the ACR!
AGAIN, many, many, many thanks! It had nothing to do with Nikon Capture software!
