does anyone know how one can make type look as though it’s engraved in stone without having to do it by hand?

Layer Styles and Lighting Effects!

That will do wonders to get great engraved type. Under "Bevel and Emboss", make sure to set "Direction" to down, and "Technique" to Chisel Hard. That will get you most of the way already! Then play around with Fill opacity, texture, gradient overlay, altitude, etc…

Lighting Effects are also a great way to do it. There are some excellent tutorials over at phong.com <http://www.phong.com/tutorials/lightingeffects/> that will help you learn lighting effects.
