actions-using variables

am relatively new to photoshop, &c. i’m playing around with actions and automating tasks. one thing i’m doing is blocking a section from a large file, copying it, and opening it up in a new window with specific settings. when i create a new window, i want the size to be the size of the selection (like it automatically is when you do it by hand) not the size of the selection when i recorded the action.

any ideas?

Try this: With selection on the layer you want record Image>Crop then Duplicate Layer>New as destination document. If you want you can go back to the original and choose the Open History state.
