Missing jpg icon in email attachment

I have a Macintosh G4 with OS 9.2.
When I send emails with Photoshop jpg images attached the icon is missing and the recipients (usually PC Windows users) have difficulty opening the files.
I use Outlook Express 5 Macintosh edition.
Any suggestions?

do they have the .jpg extension??

Yes they do. I have just tried an experiment saving as tiff and also psd and the icon is still missing.

Sorry about ther delay in replying by the way but I just tried rebuidling the desktop in case that was the problem and it takes forever using TechTool Pro !
