Book I’m reading says clicking inside thumbnail in navigator can check various areas quickly, but when I click inside the red box (is this the "thumbnail") all I get is hand tool.

I think the book is referring to states of intense zoom. If you’re zoomed in, you can click in a part of the Navigator image that is currently off the screen and move to that part instantly. You can also click and drag within the Navigator image to move the larger "real" image.

The thumbnail image in the Navigation Palette. Not the thumb on the hand tool in the toolbox. 🙂

thanks Dave!
Actually I was thinking of the red box itself was the ‘thumbnail" so that was the confusion.
