Elements 2.0 JPEGs in PowerPoint

Have Windows XP and switched from 1.0 to Elements 2.0 several months ago. Just found out that JPEG files I’ve saved in 2.0 wont’t work in PowerPoint for some reason. They look pretty much like an oil painting on steroids. However, I can get an older file, one done in Version 1.0 and it works fine in PowerPoint. I saved the same way in both versions so I’m at a loss. Any help appreciated.
