How do I change the settings so a new document will automatically open in RGB? I’ve tried resetting the preferences folder but it hasn’t helped.

Open photoshop.

File new, set to cmyk, open the new document. Close photoshop, open it again and opena new document, now every time it willl be set to CMYK

What Thee said, but he got it backwards. You want to go to RGB, so where he said CMYK, use RGB.
