I’ve tried anti-aliasing and such but it never looks as good as the text from a Word document when printed. What am I missing?

Maybe you need to raise the resolution? Check Image>Image Size. Resolution should be around 300 ppi to produce crisp text in a print.

Is there any way to have text treated as a vector? If so, would that help?

Text is vector. But you´d need a postscript printer to take advantage of that.

Cheese:

If I understand right, if you have a postscript printer and output from PS, vectored stuff [like text] stays vectored. If you have a "regular" printer, it gets rastered.

In any case, from experience of reading stuff on this forum, I’ll believe what Mathias says …

In Photoshop, yes.

Make a big doc at 25 or 50 ppi, like 8 inches tall or more. Put a big font on it and print on non postscript printer. Yuk.
If it were vector outpuit to any printer, the ppi wouldn’t have any effect one way or the other, would be smooth.
