The real question seemed to be the OP’s inability to take a shot of "The Little Mermaid" that is unobstructed by other visitors. The solution is when to take the picture, not what do with a picture taken at the wrong time. He’s just going to have to get there early in the morning before the crowds arrive.

I can’t believe he’s serious about patching together a person-free image. I think he’s just venting frustration.

Look at John J’s answer. As I said there are times to take photos and times when not to do so – In particular that photo as the Photographer needs to stand on the dry land and then early in the morning the sun is right behind the ‘Little Mermaid’ – not a lot of use to take a photo from behind – now think man, it can be done but HOW apart from spending an awful lot of money.

I’ve been there (my brother lives in Denmark), and taken an unobstructed picture of "The Little Mermaid", but I forget what time of day I was there. People do it.

The statue is not that large (about 3 feet high?) , and she’s several feet above ground level on a rock, so you don’t need that big of window to have a shot. If you’re there in the summer, the days (the sunlight) are very long.

The pissing pig in Aarhus is a better picture anyway.

I know there must be times when there is nobody around but then the light is not
right.
There is one photo I should like to take like that and that is the mermaid in
the harbour of Copenhagen. Last time I was there it was crawling with all sorts
of funny faces – hardly a Dane to be seen.

You imagine nobody is sat on her just now but someone is making it over the
stones to get in position, I still want to get that someone out of the picture
she was not there just 2 seconds ago when the other was crawling all over the
statue. Something tells me it is possible.

Use a tripod and long time exposure. You may need one or more Neutral Density
filters combined with the smallest diaphragm opening. The Mermaid will be there
but the passing visitors will not be recorded.

Thanks – you sound just like me with a long – long time spent travelling and using film – certainly with film that is the preferred method. Digitally it does not matter too much as 10 shots are neither here nor there, just put in another 4 GB card

Brilliant – thank you – I just wonder where do you dig them up.

Adobe did a demo of the feature for the announcement of CS4. You might want to see if you can find it. They also showed a streamlined use of new features to create a product package – 3D, color theme wheel, all that good stuff.

But what can I do with CS3 non-extended? Is there a way around to get the same results?

If I’m right only the 3D , video and medical possibilities aren’t there in the non-extended version.
Smart layers should work (but I’m not sure) and they work the same in CS4/CS3.

If you want 3D you’ll have to upgrade.

I’m guessing the obvious never occurred to anyone,… Arrive at the site. Walk to the mermaid, and ask anyone standing around to allow you take a clean shot of the mermaid without anyone in the shot.
Or put up a sign, closed till further notice.

You’re wrong. Stack Mode doesn’t work in non-extended versions of Photoshop.

Photoshop Elements 7 has a nifty way to automatically remove unwanted objects in a scene so long as you take several images at the same location and set-up.

I am not sure how to thank you all _ I had thought out some idea to do partly by using neutral density filter or maybe 2 and take a some very long exposures – naturally on a tripod.
Only the unwanted stuff would move around and therefore get out of focus – just what to do after that I am not sure yet, but I shall have to try the ones left for me on this trial – thank you all very much

Sorry about that. I’m using the extended version myself. Thanks for clearing it up, Johan.
