Probably too late, but this is the case manufacturers web site for the cases that I use. Not fancy, but the cases are ‘top-drawer’.

I use case ‘c’ on this page.

Bob,

I’ve been running an Atec Sonata case – <http://tinyurl.com/94h2w> – on a 3.0 P4 based system for 18 months now, and the case/power supply is brilliant. Running 2x 120GB 7200 RPM Seagate SATA drives as RAID 0 and 2x 60GB 7200RPM IDE drives, the box runs cool and as close to noisless as you could wish using just the supplied 120mm rear case fan and a Zalman low RPM CNPS7700-ALCU CPU cooler – <http://tinyurl.com/7w7a8>

Normal operating temp for the mobo and CPU is around 24-28ºC, with the hottest maxing at 34ºC for the mobo and 42ºC for the CPU after 4 hours of 70-80% CPU load converting an avi file to mpeg. The latter are cooler than the sort of temps my old P3 box ran as standard (with about 10 times the noise).

I’d thoroughly endorse the Antec option, the only thing to watch for is the hard turn forced on the HD SATA connecting cable by the sideways installation of the hard-drives. It took me quite a while to discover the cause of my RAID drives disappearing after opening the case: closing the side door put pressure on the cable and slightly loosened the connection. Nearly caused a couple of heart attacks until solved, that did.

Ha! Fred, I’ve had almost the same problem with those friggin’ SATA connectors. They suck, but I’ve read that there’s a new connector standard in the works. We are not alone!

As for the temps, it all starts with ambient. I’ve recently seen my CPU, mobo and HDD temps going up, but, uh, it’s turning summer around here. (You’re in Australia, right?)
