You must decide whether to implement the presentation for onescreen or printing purposes.
Make image 1024 pixels long side is best all around solution for onscreen use.
Or make 1-2MB (pixel dimensions unimportant) for best printing purposes.
And, btw, are you looking in slideshow mode to determine image quality? It will often look very different than in layout mode.

Mac – Thank you but Pardon my ignorance…
I tried and failed.
Let me go to the basics – What do you mean by: "make image 1024 pixels long side…"?
I opened PE2 then went to: NEW then under IMAGE SIZE I set it for: 1024 (with) by 768 pixles height , RESOLUTION: 300 and sacnned my picture.
Then I saved it ( tried 6-7 available formats ).
Opened Power Point and went to INSERT PICTURE.
Again tried all formats and got verty bad results (just at the point of composing that PP slide…)
Is there a setup in PP that I have to readjust ?
