I was surfing the web, looking for something else entirely when I came upon this page. http://www.offthemark.com/computers.htm
I’m fairly new to web design and have been developing an interest in tiled backgrounds but the one on this page has really got me hooked!

Please can anyone tell me what method is used to structure such an irregular and asymmetrical design so that it can tile so precisely? Is there a more appropriate NG I should ask on?

I don’t know if there are other options but…
You could try in CS; menu>filter>patternmaker (alt+shift+ctrl+x) play around with the setting and you might end up with a more or less seamless pattern

Thanks, I’ll have a look at that possibility. I didn’t think it would be quite that easy though. I had the impression that the drawing within the original tile would have to be structured in a special way to allow a seamless transition.

Basically, in photoshop cs you can create the image you want. The go to filters other offset and offset your image in the x and y directions. Then on your page insert the following line in the body
background="file"
