I’ve been scanning the forum and came across a few topics where problems were resolved by reassigning a new name to a file/doc. I’m understanding that this is specific to OS X.

Can someone explain? or point me to an answer?

You can’t use characters that unix does not like in file names.

Stick with numbers and letters you will be fine.

Same as Dos, Windoze and Every Mac OS. Certain Characters are reserve or have functional meaning.

You would have to check the documentation of the particular OS.
